The Andover Central High School wrestling team will send 10 wrestlers to state after a second-place finish Saturday at the Class 5A regionals in Salina.
Newton edged Central for the team title 192-154. Hays was right behind in third at 144, followed by Salina South at 126.5, Great Bend at 108, Kapaun-Mt. Carmel at 95, Andover at 27 and Salina Central at 10.
Newton, Andover Central and Hays each claimed three titles.
“We had a pretty good weekend,” Andover Central coach Chris Saferite said. “We had one heartbreak of a loss in Joe Umscheid, our 126 pounder. He worked so hard all year long. He deserved the chance to wrestle next weekend, but he came up short when it counted. My heart goes out for him.”

Alex Bontz claimed Central’s first regional title on Saturday, pinning Ethan Deterding of Hays in 1:38 at 152 pounds.
At heavyweight, Matt Henrikson pinned Grant Flemming of Salina South in 48 seconds.
In the final match of the evening, Central’s Zac Gentzler met Javier Vieyra of Salina South at 113 pounds. Gentzler scored the first takedown. Vieyra scored an escape in the first period and another in the second period. Gentzler answered with two takedowns late in the second en route to an 11-7 decision.
In the finals of 132 pounds, Luke Lee of Andover Central fell behind 4-0 to Greg Burley of Great Bend. Lee scored an escape in the third period, but gave up an intentional escape. Lee scored another takedown, but had to give up the escape, falling 6-4.
At 195 pounds, Central’s Preston Solomon was pinned in 1:20 by Newton’s Dillon Archer.
In an all-Andover final at 182 pounds, Hunter Weddington of Andover scored the first takedown against Central’s Dalton Rodd. Each wrestler was hit with a penalty point, and Weddington survived for a 3-1 decision.
Weddington avenged a loss to Rodd last month, and is Andover’s sole state qualifier.
Other Central qualifiers include Paul Suhr, who took third at 138 pounds; Jay Page, who took third at 145 pounds; Ben Lightfoot, who took fourth at 120 pounds; and Sam Arndt, who finished  fourth at 220 pounds.
The state meet is Friday and Saturday at Hartman Arena in Park City.
“I think we’re OK,” Saferite said. “We’ll have to look at the brackets and see who we get paired with. I think we’re ready to go. We’ve been wrestling well this last month, and we wrestled well this weekend. We have some favorites, and there are some other teams with favorites. That’s why we wrestle them. We have to be ready to go no matter what.”
Central enters state as defending champions, having qualified 10 for state a year ago.
“I don’t know if there’s any added pressure,” Saferite said. “We have some guys who were part of the team last year. They have the experience, and they know what it takes.”
