Students hear 9/11 accounts

Last week, students in the Andover Public Schools had an opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of people who were directly involved with the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Firefighters, students and business professionals from New York City, as well as an officer who was working at the Pentagon that day, shared their experiences through a virtual conference sponsored by Intel Education. The conference was orchestrated by Andover Middle School eighth grade language arts teacher Dyane Smokorowski and a teacher in New York City. The message of the conference for students was not only to recognize the 10th anniversary of the tragic attacks, but also to remember the power of the human spirit and community citizenship in the face of a crisis. Among the speakers in person were Lt. Col. Estaban Ramirez, an American Airlines pilot on 9/11, and Mark Karlin, an employee at Rockefeller Center on 9/11.
