  • Mother Nature turned out to be the early winner as the Class 5A State Tennis Tournament was postponed one day to Oct. 14.
When the singles competition was over, Andover Central's Megan Wong had gone 4-3 to finish 11th. Her record included a 9-5 victory in the loser's bracket over teammate Amy Fugit, who was 2-2 in the tournament.
Wong won her first match over Sara Westzel of Mill Valley (6-3, 6-1) but lost in the second round to Claudia Boretti of Topeka West (6-3, 6-4). She defeated Cheyenne English of Lansing 9-1 and Fugit before losing to Marisa Mitchell of Salina South 9-4. Still alive in the loser's bracket, Wong lost to Molly Gillcrist of St. James Academy and rebounded to defeat Macy Moyers of Great Bend 9-2 for 11th place. Wong, a junior, finished with a 24-7 season record.
Fugit opened with a win over Hannah Smith of St. James Academy (6-2, 6-0), then fell into the loser's bracket with a loss to Gwyneth Schuler of Maize South (6-2, 2-6, 10-5). In elimination matches, Fugit beat Tegan Jarchow of Shawnee Mission South 9-1 but lost to Wong and finished the year 26-9.
